The Shavings Bird – then, now, and later
The project aims to preserve and spread the technique of carving shavings birds. An intangible cultural heritage that risks being eradicated since the last practitioner in Skaraborg passed away.
About the project
The goal of the project is to preserve and spread the technique of carving shavings birds. This occurs in a first step through trading and provided documentation and then results in courses, markets, tutorials, and writings. The effect of this is expected to strengthen the Skaraborg identity and increase local practice from zero to several practitioners. This is to further establish the bird as a part of our region and to provide the shavings birds that many museums and souvenir shops claim to lack. It would create job opportunities for others in Skaraborg.
When the project is completed, the cultural heritage is expected to be so anchored in the community that it is secured from extinction and the current endangered status of the shavings bird changed.
Shavings bird then, now, and later
In the spring of 2023, I praised a friend for the carved bird she found at a flea market. ”I would have preferred to find a lucky bird,” she wrote and attached a picture that completely amazed me. Never before had I seen such a magnificent work.
