Does the fish stay — or does it swim on?
A pre-study that can change the future of sport fishing in Vänern by investigating the movement patterns of salmon and trout smolt after release in Vänern.
About the project
The project, which is run by the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland in collaboration with Vänersamarbetet and Laxfond Vänern, aims to investigate how released salmon and trout smolt behave after release at Hjortens udde and a comparative site to the north. Through advanced acoustic telemetry, the fish's movement patterns are tracked to determine whether it stays in Vänern or migrates out via Göta älv. The result is crucial for future strategies for sustainable fishing, tourism, and fish management throughout the Väner area.
The study is a collaborative project within the leader areas of Northwestern Skaraborg, Nærheten, and Future Communities Dalsland in Värmland for joint development and cooperation in and around Vänern.

”We know that fish are released — but we don't know what happens next. This study could be crucial for the continued stocking of salmon and trout in Vänern.”
